Detailed Description
Die Gegend um den Moschellandsberg war vor allem im Mittelalter eines der größten Reviere für Quecksilberabbau in Europa und ist auch das einzige Vorkommen Deutschlandweit. Gebildet hat sich das Quecksilber hauptsächlich als Verbindung mit Schwefel, dem so genannten Zinnober (HgS) oder auch Cinnabrit durch hydrothermale Ausfällung sowie als Ausscheidung oder Anreicherung in Erzen.
Eine der größten und bekanntesten Gruben am Berg war die Grube Backofen, in der man noch heute mit viel Geduld und „Glück“ Zinnober finden kann.
