@Smaragd Be3(Al,Cr)2Si6O18
Im Smaragd ist Chrom das farbgebenden Ionen (1,2,3). Beryll kann allerdings auch durch Vanadiumionen grün gefärbt sein, bei der Varietät Heliodor übernimmt Fe3+ die Rolle und bei Aquamarin ist es die Kombination aus Fe2+/Fe3+.
Im Smaragd nimmt Cr3+ den Platz von Al3+ ein, wobei das Cr3+ die tiefrote Lumineszenz (Emission um 680 nm /682 nm, Chrom-R-Linien) liefert - wie bei Rubin (chromdotiertes Aluminiumoxid Al2O3:Cr)). Das Anregungsspektrum zeigt mehrere breite Bande: im UV, um 440 nm sowie um 600 nm.
Details des Lumineszenzverhaltens hängen unter anderm auch vom Gehalt an Eisen, Vanadium oder andern Fremdionen sowie von der Cr-Konzentration ab (1,4). Im Übrigen liefert Fe3+ in Beryll eine breite Bande bei 720 nm und Mn2+ schmale Banden bei 480 und 570 nm (1).
Spektroskopische Untersuchungen können helfen den Ursprung eines Smaragds einzugrenzen (auch hinsichtlich natürlicher oder synthetischer Entstehung), da unterschiedliche, regional typische Einflüsse die Lumineszenzbanden verändern (5,6).
