Viitaniemi-pegmatite photos
« am: 13 Feb 19, 12:01 »
Hello
The rubellite photos on Viitaniemi-pegmatite site are not from Viitaniemi. Rubellite and spodumene have never been identified from Viitaniemi. Photos are from the spodumene-rubellite pegmatite in Haapaluoma.

Regards
Ilkka

Hi Ilkka,
the photographer isn't available at the moment but I will translate his comment for you.

I collect in Scandinavia for over 40 years, mostly with the WILKE book. Also I went with Hans-Jürgen Wilke and my friend Ingemar Johannson. We were together in Viitaniemi 1979, 81, 82, 83. Long time ago...
The red tourmaline which we found are in our storage labelled as "rubellite finland" and aren't sorted exactly by locality unfortunately. This is how this probably happened. Sorry!
But we have found very good red tourmaline in Viitaniemi! You can look it up in the WILKE book on page 300.
Back then we were rather looking for the rare phosphates beryllonite, jezekite, väryrynenite etc. One may not forget that the localities looked fully different 40 years ago. Many colleagues can't even imagine what was possible there back then. They're amazed everytime they visit our collection.

In the last two years we found what was published in the LAPIS magazine. Ravneberget Quarry, Søndeled, Risør, Aust-Agder, Norway...and also many better quality pieces than shown there, honestly. We found some super Thalenites in Iveland in a quality like from 100 years ago. Super good thortveitites, aeschynites xls of 5 cm, xenotim of 4 cm, extralarge gadolinite xls.

In the last summers we were on the road in north Sweden for 10 to 12 weeks and visited the less-known pegmatites with very similar mineralization and could find unbelievably good elbaite xls...or fergusonite xls, good thortveitite xls...giant magnetite xls...sorry for slobbering  :D
We tried to find out if you can still find the localities and collect using the WILKE book. Yes, sir, you can! You can find almost everything. Alot left as it was, just overgrown, like in the Sarek National Park. Finger-long Fe-Hollandite xls, awesome bixbyite xls, really good alurgite xls!!!

Hi
I asked Dr. Seppo Lahti about Viitaniemi red tourmalines. Seppo Lahti has written his doctoral dissertation on the pegmatites of Eräjärvi and he has collected at Viitaniemi more than fifty years.
http://tupa.gtk.fi/julkaisu/bulletin/bt_314.pdf
He said there is no red tourmaline at Viitaniemi.
I have collected there since year 1985 and I have found almost all minerals that exist there, all the rare phosphates, except ernstite.
I have found about fourteen new minerals for Viitaniemi and some rare minerals with only microprobe-(WDS) confirmation, too small for XRD (wickmanite s.l. and possible nanpingite with Cs2O 15,5
w% as small spots on mica). I have never seen Viitaniemi red tourmaline but I have seen Haapaluoma red tourmaline at Viitaniemi, left there by some reckless collectors. This was too common those days 1980-1990.

Cheers
Ilkka
