Although the mineral is from the Kola Peninsula, the Russians who described it named it in honor of a real live German crystallographer and mineralogist, Wulf Helmut Heinz Depmeier (born 1944), Professor of Mineralogy and Crystallography at Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel. He is a well known specialist in crystal chemistry of the sodalite-cancrinite family of minerals and structurally related synthetic compounds.

Anyway, I thought this was an admirable example of absence of nationalism, and I hope a German will name a mineral after a Russian soon!

Hallo,

Alfredo: I do absolutely agree with you. He is one of the most honorable persons I know. I had heard some of his lectures and can tell that he always do what he can for the students. He works together with St. Petersburg University, Russia.

Glück Auf!/Regards,
Sebastian Möller

"Anyway, I thought this was an admirable example of absence of nationalism, ..."
