Tasmanien ist ein großer Produzent von Au, Os, Ir, Sn, Ag, Pb, Zn, Cu und Fe.


Geschichte

Die Insel südlich von Australien wurde erst spät von Europäern besiedelt. Die erste Siedlung errichteten die Briten im Jahr 1803, Hobart gründeten sie 1804. Zufällige Funde von Zinnerz, Gold, Bleierzen und Edelsteinen wurden schon 1799 festgestellt. Der erste verlässliche Bericht über den Abbau einer Metalllagerstätte stammt von 1852, Gold bei Fingal.
James Smith, Buschmann und Forscher, entdeckte Zinnadern südlich des Arthur Rivers 1871. Dies führte zum Abbau in der "Mt. Bischoff Tin Mine" in den folgenden Jahren. Die Wirtschaft Tasmaniens erlebte einen Boom. Der bis dahin nahezu unberührte Westen Tasmaniens wurde erforscht. Kapital für die Prospektion und Entwicklung von Lagerstätten stand zur Verfügung. Es wurden weitere Entdeckungen gemacht:

  • Zeehan-Dundas (Ag-Pb-Lagerstätten) 1882
  • Mt. Lyell Kupfermine 1883
  • Renison Zinnmine 1890
  • Mt. Reid mineral field (Roseberry-Williamsford) 1894

In den 1960ern wurde die Mt. Cleveland Tin Mine in Luina neu erschlossen sowie die Eisenerzlagerstätten beim Savage River; 1980 die Ag-Pb-Zn-Lagerstätten beim Que River und 1986 der Hellyer Ag-Pb-Erzkörper.


Geologie

Die Gesteine Westtasmaniens sind von spätem Präkambrium bis frühem Devon.

Die größte präkambrische Region (Tyennan) liegt im Osten; metamorphe Sedimente haben sich während der Frenchman-Orogenese vor 800 Mio. Jahren gebildet. Die Region um Rocky Cape liegt im Westen und besteht aus nicht-metamorphen Sedimenten, die in der Penguin-Orogenese vor 725 Mio. Jahren gefaltet wurden. Der Gürtel ist bekannt als "Arthur Lineament", welcher aus Dolomit- und Magnesiteinheiten besteht und am Savage River aus silikatischen Linsen von Pyrit und Magnetit.

Die hauptsächlich (prä)kambrischen Gesteine haben sich zwischen Tyennan und Rocky Cape entwickelt. Die Ursequenzen bestehen aus marinen Sedimenten, die hauptsächlich aus quarzitischen Sandsteine­n und Siltsteinen aufgebaut sind, welche wiederum manchmal dicke Dolomitschichten enthalten können. Diese Sedimente sind überlagert von Tonstein und Grauwackenturbiditen. Während späteren Druckprozessen sind ultramafische Massen in den Sedimenten intrudiert und bilden eine Ader von Nickelsulfiden, Chromit und Osmiridium.

Die Intrusion des Mt. Reid-Vulkans, bestehend aus rhyolithischen und andesischen Laven, Ascheströmen, Pyroklasten und andere Intrusivgesteinen, erfolgte im Mittleren Präkambrium. Dieser Gürtel bildet linsenförmige Lagerstätten, die derbe Sulfide der Elemente Zn, Pb, Cu, Ag und Au enthalten und sich 150km von Elliot Bay im Süden bis Que River um Norden erstrecken. Am Südende in der Nähe von Queenstown sind die Lagerstätten reich an Kupfer, besonders durch Chalkopyrit- und Pyritkörper bei Mt. Lyell; im Norden die Que River-Lagerstätte mit massiven Sulfiden, reich an Blei und Zink.
