Profile
Bolivien / La Paz, Departamento / Larecaja, Provinz / Sorata / Ancohuma pegmatite district | ||
From the town of Sorata take taxi 5km SE to village of Pampa Colani, then on the hiking trail Sendero de Chillata up to Mirador Titisani (viewpoint), then the Sendero de Laguna Glaciar, which passes just a few hundred meters west of the pegmatite belt. A very fit hiker could go round trip in one day, but better to take camping gear. |
A roughly N-S trending belt of pegmatites runs for approximately 5 km along the western contact zone of the Illampu batholith at elevations around 4,800 to 5,000 meters above sea level. Not yet worked by miners or collectors. |
Natural outcrops |
Rutile-bearing pegmatites and molybdenite-bearing veins in the contact zone between a granodiorite batholith and metamorphosed sediments. |
Snowstorms are likely during the summer rainy season. Winter can get very cold at night but is usually dry. Altitude sickness can be dangerous for sea level dwellers. |
