Detailed Description

Die Achat-Vorkommen in Botswana liegen nahe der Stadt Bobonong im östlichen Botswana. Zum Teil reichen die Vorkommen bis nach Transvaal.

Botswana-Achate zeigen in der Regel eine feine Bänderung. Begehrt sind Steine, die aufgrund ihrer Bänderung einen “Schatteneffekt” zeigen. Die häufigsten Farben sind Braun, Rosa und Rottöne die mit einer weißen Bänderung kombiniert sind. Auch Porzellan-Achate kommen vor. Oft wird die Bänderung durch Deformationen verändert, zum Beispiel durch einen Durchström-Ventil. Zum Teil wird sie komplett auf eine Seite des Achates verschoben. Dies gibt den Steinen eine durchaus gewünschte Lebendigkeit. Auch groß ausgebildete Sphärolithe das Bild von Botswana-Achaten gestalten. Chalcedon-Gewächse, geradlinig ausgebildet und von unten nach obenaufsteigend, können ein Aspekt des Achat-Bildes sein. Diese Gewächse werden im englischen Sprachraum als “stalkes” (Stelzen) bezeichnet. Seltener findet man in den Mandel die geradlinig ausgebildete sogenannte “Uruguay-Achat-Bänderung”

Mittlerweile haben sich die Möglichkeiten, eine Achatsammlung um schöne Botswana-Achate zu bereichen, stark vermindert. Das liegt in der Hauptsache daran, daß es nunmehr verboten ist, Rohmaterial aus Botswana zu exportieren. Allein bearbeitete Ware (z.B. Trommelsteine ) dürfen das Land verlassen.
