Geology

Verwitterter Carbonatit-Komplex, bestehend aus 3 separaten Lagern in Beforsit, Glimmerit, Sövit und etwas Pyroxenit. Mit einem Durchmesser von 4,5 km ist der Barreiro-Komplex die weltgrößte Niob-Lagerstätte. Daneben bedeutend als SEE-Lieferant.

Erz-Reserven lagen in den frühen 1980er Jahren bei mehr als 450 Mio. t Nb- Erz (2,5% Nb2O5, 4,4% SEO), und ca. 0,8 Mio. t Laterit-Erz (13,5% SEO, 2% Nb2O5, 0,05% U3O8).
