Detailed Description

Die Demokratische Republik Kongo (DR Kongo), bis 1960 Belgisch-Kongo, von 1971 bis 1997 Zaïre, liegt in Zentralafrika und grenzt an (von N im Uhrzeigersinn): die Zentralafrikanische Republik, den Sudan, Uganda, Ruanda, Burundi, Tansania, Sambia, den Atlantik, Angola und die Republik Kongo. Sie ist an Fläche der 3.-größte und an Bevölkerung der 4.-größte Staat Afrikas. Die Demokratische Republik Kongo ist nicht zu verwechseln mit der W gelegenen Republik Kongo, dem ehemaligen Französisch-Kongo.

Geologie

Der Bergbau ist der wichtigste Wirtschaftszweig (Kongo wurde auch das Kupferland genannt). Kongo war 1974 vom drastischen Verfall des Weltmarktpreises für Kupfer schwer betroffen. Bekannt ist die DR Kongo auch für die reichen Coltan-Vorkommen. Coltan enthält zwei der begehrtesten Metallerze (Columbit und Tantalit), die Niob und Tantal enthalten.
Weitere Bodenschätze, die gefördert werden, sind Gold, Silber, Diamanten, Erdöl, Cobalt (Weltspitze), Mangan, Zink, Zinn, Cadmium, Germanium und Beryllium. Diese Vorkommen sind einer der Gründe, warum von den Nachbarn Uganda, Ruanda und Burundi durch Besetzung der Ost-Provinzen der Bürgerkrieg immer wieder aufs Neue angefacht wird.
