Allgemeines

In den Anfängen des Bergbaus von Shaba suchte man nach Gold, wurde jedoch meist enttäuscht: überall nur Kupfer. Hier allerdings hatte man Glück. Am häufigsten ist in Mutoshi Malachit, der interessante Aggregate bildet. Das gediegene Gold befindet sich im Malachit, was für diese Lagerstätte charakteristisch ist. Schon 1903 wurde der goldreiche Teil von der TCL abgebaut. Erst in den 1940ern nutzte man auch den Malachit zur Kupfergewinnung. Die Gesamtproduktion an Gold betrug 700 kg.
In Mutoshi fand man außerdem noch ged. Platin, Agardit-(Y), diverse Vanadate, Uranmineralien und auch blauen Dioptas.
