Lage

Dieses Gebiet besteht aus einer 30 km langen Kupfer-Kobalt-Lagerstätte (insgesamt 1.437 km²), an deren Enden einerseits der Hügel Tenke emporragt und andererseits der Fungurume. Die Lagerstätte liegt 175 km nordwestlich von Lumbumbashi.

Mineralien

Die Kupfer-Kobalt-Mineralisation ist hauptsächlich an zwei je fünf bis 15 Meter dicken Sedimente gebunden und abgegrenzt von hartem verkieseltem Dolomit. In der verwitterten Zone besteht die Primärmineralisation aus Malachit, Pseudomalachit und Chrysokoll. Von den Kobaltmineralien sind Erythrin, Heterogenit und Sphärocobaltit die häufigsten. In den Lagerstätten von Fungurume erstreckt sich die Oxidationszone von 50-100 m unter der Oberfläche, bei den Lagerstätten von Tenke 100-150 m. Mit zunehmender Tiefe weichen die Oxidmineralien den sulfidischen. In diesen Übergangsphasen ist Chalkosin, zusammen mit Digenit, vorherrschend. In der Sulfidzone kommen hauptsächlich Chalkosin und Digenit vor, untergeordnet noch Bornit und Chalkopyrit. Haupt-Kobaltmineral ist dort Carrollit.
