Münchener Mineralientage 2012 "The Munich Show"

Stefan

A comment and fair report of Stefan

For the 49th year once again the Munich Mineral Show was held. A few years ago under the old leadership the motto almost entirely stood under the theme of minerals and fossils. This year not only the name seems to change away from the "Munich Mineral Show" changing to "The Munich Show". The new exhibition management, led by the young Mr. Keilmann seems not quite knowing where to go or has something bigger in mind. One can imagine something in "Munich Mineral Days", it is difficult in the name "The Munich Show". The new show management seems to leave the common way, to keep all options open with a new name.

On highway billboards you could read "The Munich Show" this year. Only insider could imagine what that might be. The billboards in Munich were small and not very meaningful. This was also reflected back on the number of visitors, which proved subjectively significantly lower than in previous years. It has been said, that has never been so few people roaming the halls. The reason can't hardly be the fourth hall, since it has already been used for several years.

General it seemed new markets stood in foreground. Advertising was sold both in the exhibition catalog, as well as in the theme catalog. Previously these were one issue. Advertisers will have been less pleased to have found their ad in disposable catalog. Free tickets were relatively easy to get in the past. The so attracted additional clientele seems to be missing. Press cards, whether promised or earlier also sent just like that, did not materialize. Even people who have supported the special exhibition in the past year, have not been taken into account.

Under the leadership of Mr. Keilmann Senior it was current practice to invite all exibitors to a drink and snack before the show's opening, nowadays this is cutback. The visitors will not notice much of this.

With their solid audience the long-established dealers may came at their expense this year. Whether this came true for other dealers and distributors from overseas it still seems questionable because of the lesser audiance. If further mineral dealers stay out, the fair has ceded its leadership in Europe to the under new management well-running exhibition of "Saint Marie" in the last few years. The tie up to the fair in Tucson with its numerous satellite shows and showrooms can not build anyway.

Against all the criticism, is still said that the exhibition - despite the world's highest ticket prices for fairs of its kind - was worth a visit. Dealers, museums, and other exhibitors have mostly done a fabulous job and like every year beautiful fossils and minerals could be acquired. Also bargains and rarities could be bought. The experiences and the accumulated knowledge in such a small space is always worth a visit.

„Geheimnisse Afrikas“ or the „African Secrets“

The quite fascinating exhibition "Geheimnisse Afrikas" or "African Secrets" was largely assembled through pieces from dealers and collectors. Some exhibits were already shown in professional journals. From "secrets" can therefore be hardly spoken. Nevertheless, the exhibition was successful and for the collector a feast and The highlight of the show.

Not even half a hall was filled with fossils. A small exhibition was present, a highlight as of the last year unfortunately not.

All sort of strange

Much space was given to the dealers in Hall B6, which had only marginal or little to do with minerals. Stands with 'eco-clothes", "water conditioners" and wellness could be admired in hall B6.

The subsequent exhibition of "Flying jewels" from last year called "Fool's gold and Silver fish" was a loveless implementation of the book "Katzengold und Silberfisch" ("fool's gold and silver fish") which was shown before in the "Natural History Museum of Viena" of course more fascinating. Gold fish were swimming in an aquarium, while a nugget of gold should clarify where the name came from. Thus, there was a "Malachite Spiny Lizard" together with a large malachite in a terrarium. Not a safe natural environment, which is likely to be for the poor animal also hardly been healthy. In parallel, for the third time "Flying jewels" were presented.

How a butterfly enclosure is accomplishing with partly hatched butterflies to the previous theme of the fair falls in line is difficult to decipher. The kids liked it and "The Munich Show" fit all.

The dear children

In general you have to say, the kids had fun at the fair. Sharktooth and gemstone tracing in the sandbox were conducted free and gladly accepted. Kudos to the fair management. The children had the opportunity to search for fossilized fish in lithographic limestone like in the past. Geodes were cracked. The kids could try their hand at preparing and gold panning.

Alpin

The Alpine area was well staffed by "KRISTALPIN". Total the "Alpine" exhibitors were declining. Rumours say that the prices will raise next year, which should lead to further decline.

Showcases

The Showcases were like every year a head turner and worth a visit. Especially impressed me the collection of cutted "Isarkiesel". What treasures can be found there in the gravel pits in and around Munich, a mineralogical otherwise rather less famous area. Of course, the other showcases were no less lovingly designed.

Kurioses

A collector, our member "Josef 84,55", succeeded to his half of a japanese twin, which he acquired in 2011 at the exhibition and its 2nd half was missing, to locate these at the show 2012 and to purchase it. Now, the two crystals are reunited. It's luck and perseverance.

- Citation: Josef 84,55.

Fakes

Already at the beginning the colored Magnesite, which were offered as turquoises are noticed. Also on the last day they were offered easily visible to everyone.

Forecast

Wherever the journey in the coming 50th Anniversary year will go - we should be excited. We may hope that the show management has recovered this year only for the the big shot next year.
