Additional information / Summary

Allosaurus war ein großer carnivorer Dinosaurier des Oberjura und wurde bis zu zwölf Meter lang und mehrere Tonnen schwer.
Gesicherte Funde liegen aus Nordamerika und Südeuropa vor, weitere angebliche aus Afrika und der Unterkreide von Australien sind nicht sicher zuordenbar.

Detailed description

Allosaurus hatte einen relativ großen, aber schmalen Schädel mit zwei markanten Höckern über den Augen. Er lief auf den langen Hinterbeinen und war wie alle Theropoden ein Zehengänger. Der lange Schwanz balancierte den Körper auf den Hinterbeinen aus. Die relativ kurzen kräftigen Arme endeten in einer dreifingerigen Hand mit scharfen Krallen.

Derzeit ist noch unklar, wie viele Arten wirklich zu dieser Gattung gehören.
