Detailed description

Araucarioxylon = fossilies Holz der Araukarien

Araucariaceae, eine Familie der Koniferen (Coniferales), zu denen u.a. auch die kalifornischen Mammutbäume gehören. Araukarien sind Verwandte der Norfolk-Tanne ("Zimmertanne") Araucaria excelsa. Fossil belegt seit der Trias; etwa seit dem Tertiär auf die südliche Halbkugel beschränkt.
Rezente Bestände im westpazifischen Gebiet und in Südamerika. Heutige Zapfen zerfallen, fossil gibt es einzelne Zapfenschuppen, zerfallene Zapfen und komplette Zapfen sowie verkieselte Hölzer.

Fossilies Holz der Araukarien wird oft als Araucarioxylon bezeichnet. Allerdings sollte man nur dann von Araucariaceae oder gar konkret von Araucaria sprechen, wenn ein Fossil auch wirklich exakt als solche bestimmbar ist.
Für Hölzer verschiedener Arten von ausgestorbenen Koniferen mit Holz vom Araukarien-Typ wurde (als überholte Bezeichnung) lange "Araucarioxylon" verwendet. Solche Hölzer werden heute unter Agathoxylon zusammengefasst.
