Die gezeigte Taxonomie ist der Versuch aus Einstufungen verschiedenster Wissenschaftler eine schlüssige Zuordnung zu treffen. Da sich die Taxonomie durch verfeinerte Untersuchungsmethoden und weitere Funde verändern kann, versteht sich unsere Zuordnung nur als Anhaltspunkt.

Dentalium

Ausführliche Beschreibung

Scaphopode (Grabfüßer oder Kahnfüßer)

Bei Scaphopoden wachsen, wie bei Muscheln, ventralwärts über den Weichkörper die Mantelklappen, jedoch sind sie zu einer Röhre verwachsen. Dieses Gehäuse mit kreisrundem Querschnitt ist vorn und hinten offen und verjüngt sich nach hinten.

Durch die gößere vordere Öffnung streckte Dentalium die Mundöffnung und Fangfäden, mit denen es das Sediment nach Nahrung absuchte. Das hintere Ende ragte nach oben aus dem Untergrund und ermöglichte ihm die Atmung und den Austausch von Wasser.

Dentalium sind anders als die Muscheln eine formenarme Weichtiergruppe. Sie bezeichnen strandnahe Ablagerungen, da sie im Flachwasser lebten.

Dentalium kommt rezent vor, Funde reichen bis ins Devon zurück.
