Entgegen einem weit verbreiteten Irrtum war der Riesenhirsch Megaloceros giganteus nicht der größte Cervidae aller Zeiten. Was die Spannweite seines Geweihs (bis zu 3,60 m) angeht, ist er jedoch Rekordhalter.
Megaloceros giganteus starb auch nicht, wie oft angenommen, mit dem Ende des Pleistozäns völlig aus, sondern überlebte in lokalen Rückzugsgebieten (westliches Sibirien) bis ins Holozän. Die jüngsten bekannten Funde sind etwa 8000 Jahre alt.
