Die Familie Nimravidae gehört zu den katzenartigen Karnivoren. Sie entstand im Eozän und existierte bis ins Pliozän. Früher für Vorfahren der Katzen (Felidae) gehalten, gelten sie heute als deren Schwestergruppe – ihre katzenartigen Merkmale entwickelten sich durch konvergente Evolution. Einige Arten der Nimravidae besaßen mächtige Säbelzähne, welche an jene der Säbelzahnkatzen (Machairodontinae) erinnern – die Nimravidae werden deshalb auch als Scheinsäbelzahnkatzen bezeichnet.
