Detailed description

Crinoiden gehören zur Gruppe der Stachelhäuter. Trotz ihres Namens und Aussehens handelt es sich nicht um Pflanzen, sondern um Meerestiere, genauer gesagt um Stachelhäuter. Eine ausgewachsene Seelilie besteht aus einer Krone mit vielfach verzweigten Armen und einem Kelch an der Basis. In der Krone befindet sich ein Filterorgan, um Meeresplankton als Nahrung aufzunehmen.

Hier ein Fundbericht aus dem Jahre 1894 von Prof. Dr. O. Jaekel von einem weiteren, sehr ähnlichen (heute historischen) Vorkommen:

„Die Gesteinsplatte besteht aus einem reinen, ziemlich dichten Schaumkalk, dessen Oberseite ockergelblich bis rostbraun gefärbt ist und unstreitig die Oberfläche eines einstigen Meeresgrundes darstellt, auf welchem sich jene Crinoiden angesiedelt hatten. Auf diesem Boden finden sich verschiedene scharf ausgeprägte Schlepp- und Kriechspuren, ferner sind die von den Ophiuriden (Schlangensterne) hinterlassenen Eindrücke in der gebräunten Oberflache vollkommen scharf... Hier musste der Boden unstreitig zur Zeit der Ansiedelung der Crinoiden eine ziemliche Festigkeit erlangt haben, was für die Art der Bildung submariner Kalkschichten nicht ohne Interesse ist, und das Wasser über dem Boden muss relativ klar und rein gewesen sein.

Über dieser besprochenen Kalkbank lag eine gelbliche lehmige Schicht, als ich die Platte erhielt, nur in der geringen Mächtigkeit von einigen Millimetern; sie dürfte vielleicht an Ort und Stelle im Steinbruch dicker gewesen sein.. Mit der Ablagerung dieses lehmigen Schlammes mussten sich die ökologischen Verhältnisse für die Bewohner des vorher reinen Wassers sehr wesentlich und jedenfalls nicht zu ihrem Vorteile ändern. Namentlich ist nicht anzunehmen, dass Crinoiden bei der eigentümlichen Art ihrer Ernährung in stark verschlammtem Wasser leben können. Die hieraus sich ergebende Folgerung, dass dieselben bei der Ablagerung der Lehmschicht schnell gestorben seien, erlangt meines Erachtens dadurch eine sehr beweiskräftige Stütze, dass in der betreffenden Bank Individuen der verschiedensten Altersstadien liegen. Nun zeigt sich aber bei den Crinoiden unserer Platte noch eine weitere Erscheinung, die in ihren Folgen sehr wichtig geworden ist. An neun von siebzehn Kronen sind die oben gelegenen Arme abgelöst und bisweilen in toto, meist in einzelnen Stücken eine Strecke weit von dem Kelch auf dem Boden verstreut. Da diese auffallende Erscheinung an der Mehrzahl der Kelche zu beobachten ist, so kann sie nicht als Zufall betrachtet werden, sondern muss eine gemeinsame Ursache haben. Diese kann aber nur darin zu suchen sein, dass die aus der einhüllenden Schlammschicht herausragenden Teile der bereits verwesten Crinoiden durch Strömungen abgelöst und ein Stück weit verschleppt wurden...

Die besprochene Ablösung der oben gelegenen Arme von den Kronen hat nun die für das Studium jener Crinoiden äußerst erfreuliche Folge gehabt, dass dadurch an einer Reihe von Exemplaren die Kelchdecken in ausgezeichneter Weise freigelegt worden sind.“
