Detailed description

Crinoiden gehören zur Gruppe der Stachelhäuter. Trotz ihres Namens und Aussehens handelt es sich nicht um Pflanzen, sondern um Meerestiere. Eine ausgewachsene Seelilie besteht aus einer Krone mit vielfach verzweigten Armen und einem Kelch an der Basis. In der Krone befindet sich ein Filterorgan, um Meeresplankton als Nahrung aufzunehmen. Es gibt sowohl freischwimmende Vertreter der Gruppe (z.B. Saccocoma), als auch (überwiegend) solche, welche mit einem Stiel am Substrat haften (z.B. Encrinus).
