Die Orthogastropoda war eine wichtige taxonomische Gruppierung von Schnecken, eine extrem große Unterklasse innerhalb der riesigen Klasse Gastropoda nach der älteren Taxonomie der Gastropoda (Ponder & Lindberg, 1997).

Das Taxon Orthogastropoda wird nach der Taxonomie der Gastropoda von Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005, nicht mehr verwendet.

Ponder und Lindberg (1997) zeigten im Buch The Southern Synthesis, die Orthogastropoda als eine von zwei Unterklassen der Gastropoda, die andere Unterklasse war eine sehr viel kleinere Gruppe namens Eogastropoda, die nur 5 Familien von echten Napfschnecken enthielt.

Diese Unterklasse, die Orthogastropoda, die man vielleicht die wahren Schnecken nennen könnte, wurde am prägnantesten definiert als alle Gastropoden, die nicht Mitglieder der Patellogastropoda, den wahren Napfschnecken waren.
