Detailed description

Der Körper dieser großen Tiergruppe zeigt eine zweiseitige Symmetrie, also eine linke und rechte Seite, wie man sie bei den höher entwickelten Tieren einschließlich des Menschen findet.

Bei den Bilateria liegt zwischen Ektoderm und Entoderm als dritte Schicht das Mesoderm. In der Embryonalentwicklung gehen aus dem Ektoderm in der Regel Haut und Nervensystem hervor, aus dem Entoderm entstehen der Darm und einige mit ihm verbundene Organe, und das Mesoderm entwickelt sich zu den restlichen Körperteilen, u. a. zu den Muskeln.
