Zusammen mit den Kiefermäulern (Gnathostomata) bilden die Kieferlosen den Stamm der Wirbeltiere. Die kieferlosen Wirbeltiere nehmen nur einen kleinen Teil ein.
Agnatha waren im Altpaläozoikum kieferlose fossile Panzerfische (Ostracodermen). Rezent sind sie in Form der Cyclostomen (Rundmäuler, wie das Neunauge - in der hier verwendeten Systematik nach fossilworks aber anders zugeordnet) vertreten.
