Detailed description

Der Erzeuger (diverse Krebsarten) stabilisiert in weichem Sediment die Wände seiner Tunnel mit Schleim, organischen Resten oder Kot, die er mitunter zu Pellets formt, was eine bucklige (nodosa, lat. = die Dornige) Oberfläche der entsprechenden Gangausfüllungen zur Folge hat.
Das organische Material dient bei der späteren Sedimentdiagenese manchmal als Auslöser und Schwefellieferant für die Bildung von Pyrit- oder Markasitkonkretionen, die den Gang komplett ausfüllen können und dabei die Textur seiner Wände abformen. Das organische Material selbst wird dabei vollständig abgebaut.
