Detailed description

Placodus ist eine Gattung diapsider Echsen aus der Mitteltrias (ca. 247.2 bis 235 mya) Mitteleuropas.
Laut wikipedia einzige derzeit anerkannte Art ist Placodus gigas (nach Rieppel 1995). Bei fossilworks wird hingegen (noch? wieder?) eine ganze Reihe von Arten angeführt.
Die Gattung wird einer ausgestorbenen Gruppe mariner Diapsiden, den Sauropterygia (Flossenechsen), zugerechnet.
