Show images at the forum

This website offers two possibilities to integrate images. One way is to show images at the forum, which is described on this page. This is useful for identifying a finding, questions about an image or common discussions about image quality and how to improve it. Another option is the documentation via Lexicon-upload. Lexicon images can also be included in forum articles.

Inherently images should not be integrated from external websites like foto-communities, Picasa Web Albums or Flickr.

We can not guarantee the availability of external sources. Articles are not comprehensible, if images are not available any more. Another purpose is to avoid oversized images in articles because they could extend the loading time of a website. Also it endangers the site by viruses and may violate copyrights.

Please consider this advice otherwise external images and if necessary also the article will be removed!

All registered users are entitled to add images to postings. Important : Registration !

Here are two possibilities to attach images to forum articles.

The direct upload from your harddrive to forum articles

This way images of regular or lower quality can be uploaded directly from your harddrive to forum articles. Discussions about determination of minerals, fossils, rocks and locations or photography are welcome.

Important requirements and limitations

The following formats are accepted : *.jpg, *.png oder *.gif

Limitation : maximum 256 kb per image and maximum 512 kb total volume with maximum 4 images per posting. Accordingly the 512 kb total volume can be split for example in 3 x 170 kb , 4 x 128 kb.

Note: Larger images would extend the loading time for visitors.

How to bring the images to proper size ?

You might use e.g. the program GIMP. It is freeware and is similar to Photoshop, the leading commercial product for image processing. For scaling Irfanview, Picasa etc. are applicable, too.

At first mark the main content and crop if necessary. Scale to the right size with the original image aspect ratio. A good size is in the range of 1024 * 768 pixel.

A short workshop for GIMP is available at the lexicon. (German only)
(see also size,scale,crop at gimp.org )

Sending or uploading images

If the required size fits, you can start posting. Go to the forum to "new topic / Neues Thema" or "reply / antworten".

Upload images to the lexicon and link them to a forum article

This method is recommended for images of higher quality, which are supposed to appear in the lexicon as reference. The challenge is quality not quantity !! To determine snapshots of finds please use the described method of direct upload from harddrive to forum on top of the page!

The lexicon upload allows larger images and higher resolution.

The theoretical upper limit for lexicon images is

3.0720.000 Byte = 3 MB maximum width = 5000 Pixel maximum height = 4000 Pixel

The images should mostly be smaller. In most cases 300 to 500 kb lead to very good results. Too large images appear pixellated and contain no additional information. Here the motto is as big as necessary and as small as possible to show all information.

A detailed description for the upload to the lexicon can be found on Lexicon-Upload.

Uploaded images have to be associated to a mineral, fossil, rock and a location or a lexicon page. Otherwise the images are only visible in the user homepage or the copyright owner. Therefore the user has to enter his copyright preferences to his user profile.

For discussions or participation in a photography competition every lexicon-image can be attached to forum-articles via link. In contempt of the size lexicon-images do not take more storage space. Multiple images in one posting are possible. The images will appear at the corresponding position where the link is placed.

For linkage just click the desired lexicon-image and enlarge. Click below the extended image the option "insert picture into forum / Bild ins Forum".

Copy the complete line and insert in the article (optional 2 browser windows). Use "select / auswählen" to mark the link. Right-click to copy and right-click to insert at to the article. Alternatively you can use "ctrl / insert" to copy and "shift / insert" to paste to the desired position.
