Gideon Mantell

Gideon Algernon Mantell (* 3. 2. 1790 in Lewes, Sussex; † 10. 11. 1852 in Clapham, Surrey) war ein englischer Geologe, Paläontologe und Arzt.

Mantell gilt (unter anderem) als Entdecker des Iguanodon, er ordnete dessen Reste erstmals (und anfangs gegen heftigen Widerstand anderer Wissenschafter) einer mesozoischen Echse zu.

Umgezogen nach Brighton, errichte er dort mit seinen Fossilien ein Museum, welches aber ein solcher finanzieller Misserfolg war, dass er seine Sammlung ans British Museum verkaufen musste.
