Bournonit ist für sich kein bedeutendes Erzmineral. Es wird mit anderen Kupfer-, Antimon-, Bleierzen, mit denen es gemeinsam vorkommt, verhüttet.

wegen der auffälligen Zahnradform wurde er von den einheimischen Bergleuten mit dem Lokalnamen 'Rädelerz' - altenglisch 'Wheel Ore' - bedacht.
