Generation conditions

"Dolomit-Problem":

"Crystals grow in supersaturated solutions. A mysterious counterexample is dolomite CaMg(CO3)2, a geologically abundant sedimentary mineral that does not readily grow at ambient conditions, not even under highly supersaturated solutions." Joonsoo Kim et al. (2023)

Eine natürliche Bildung kann nachweislich unter Niedertemperatur- und Niederdruckbedingungen (d.h. etwa Umgebungsbedingungen) stattfinden. Allerdings sind Mg2+ und Ca2+ derart unterschiedlich, dass unter diesen Bedingungen sich eigentlich keine stabile "solid-solution" der zugehörigen Karbonate ausbildet (z.B. Deelmann 2011). Insofern ist der Mechanismus, der zur Bildung von Dolomit bei Niedertemperatur (unter 100°C) und Atmosphärendruck führt, nicht sicher geklärt (Stand 11/2023). Eine erfolgsversprechende Route könnten zyklische Übergänge zwischen Unter- zu Übersättigung der Ausgangslösung sein, welche die Bildung von Dolomit massiv verstärken (Pina 2022, Kim et al. 2023).
