Occurrences

In Al-reichen Metamorphiten, besonders Metapeliten und in peralumischen granitoiden Magmatiten, Kontaktmeamorphe Tonsteine in Basalten (Xenolithe z.B. der Eifelvulkane)

Generation conditions

Hochtemperatur-Niederdruck-Modifikation von Al2SiO5, bei niedriger Temperatur liegt Andalusit, bei höherem Druck Kyanit vor.

Associations

In Metapeliten gern mit Plagioklas, Kalifeldspat und Quarz sowie Biotit und Cordierit, bei hohen Temperaturen noch Enstatit. In den Xenolithen auch Korund.
