Das Mineral wurde zuerst als Obertit anerkannt (Hawthorne et al., American Mineralogist, 85, 236-241 (2000)); Nach einer Prüfung durch das Amphibol Subkomitee als Ferri-Obertit umbenannt (Hawthorne et al., American Mineralogist, 97, 2031–2048 (2012)). Eine gründliche Prüfung der chemischen Analyse ergab Mn3+ > Fe3+, daher wurde das Mineral zu Mangani-Obertite umbenannt.
