Kosmochlor in Jadeitit

Kosmochlor (früher Ureyit) kommt in kurzprismatischen Kristallen bis 2 mm, sowie faserig und in Form polykristalliner Aggregate vor. Das Mineral ist Hauptbestandteil einiger Jadeitite, wie auch ein akzessorisches Mineral einiger Eisenmeteoriten.

Die Kristalle sind halbdurchsichtig. Die Farbe ist smaragdgrün, grün oder gelb in dünnen Schichten. Die Spaltbarkeit ist gut auf {110}, die Härte liegt bei ca. 6, die kalkulierte Dichte ist 3,60.

Kosmochlor aus terrestrischen Vorkommen ist bekannt von Taw Maw und anderen Orten im Myitkyina-Mogaung-Distrikt im Kachin-Staat von Myanmar, wo er in Jadeitit mit Jadeit, Chromit, Chro,-Jadeit und Chlorit vorkommt. Andere Fundorte sind Mocchie im Val di Susa, Piemonte in Italien und der Williams Creek im Mendocino County in Kalifornien. Die bekanntesten Meteorite, in welchen Kosmochlor Bestandteil ist, kommen von Toluca (mit Graphit (Var. Cliftonit), Chromdiopsid und Troilit), Coahuila (mit Daubréelit, Hex River Mts.-Meteorit und Canyon Diablo-Meteorite (mit Krinovit, Roedderit, Hoch-Albit, Richterit und Chromit)).

Der Name des Minerals ist zusammengesetzt aus kosmisch (wegen seines meteoritischen Vorkommens) und chloros (grün).
