Dysprosium
Geschichte
1886 gelang dem Franzosen P.E. Lecoq de Boisbaudran die Isolierung von Dysprosiumoxid aus einer Probe Holmiumoxid, das man bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch für eine einheitliche Substanz gehalten hatte.
Vorkommen
Dysprosium kommt in der Natur nicht als freies Element vor; es wird aus den Mineralien Xenotim, Fergusonit, Gadolinit, Euxenit, Polycras, Blomstrandin, Monazit und Bastnäsit gewonnen, in welchen es oft zusammen mit Erbium und Holmium und verschiedenen anderen Seltenen Erden vorkommt.
Der größte Anteil des weltweit erzeugten Dysprosiums stammt aus den Tonerde-Lagerstätten in Südchina.
Weitere Lagerstätten sind Monazitsande, d.h., ein Gemisch verschiedener Phosphate. Das Metall Dysprosium erhält man als Nebenprodukt bei der Extraktion von Yttrium.
