Detailed Description

Der Geologe Jules Garnier fand 1863 das später nach ihm benannten Nickel-Mineral Garnierit. Ab 1873 vereinzelter Abbau von Lagerstätten, der ab 1880 mit der Gründung des Unternehmens Société Le Nickel im großen Maßstab betrieben wurde. Es sind gewaltige Nickel-Vorkommen zu finden, etwa ein Viertel der gesamten Vorkommen der Welt. Diese werden seit Beginn der Kolonialzeit genutzt. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg gab es den sogenannten „Nickel-Boom“. Die Eingriffe in die Ökosysteme der Insel sind teils erheblich. Die „Société le Nickel“ betreibt in der Hauptstadt Nouméa, kaum 2 km von der Innenstadt entfernt, eine Nickelschmelze. Gegenwärtig sind zwei hydrometallurgische Nickelfabriken geplant, die je im S (Goro) und im N (Koniambo), betrieben werden sollen.
