Detailed Description

Birdlings Flat ist ein flacher Strand im Süden der Banks Halbinsel - populär unter neuseeländischen Achatsammlern. Der Strand besteht größtenteils aus Grauwacken-Kieseln. Unter ihnen lassen sich allerdings auch leicht Achate, Karneole, Quarze, Quarzite, vulkanische Kiesel, Jaspisse und gelegentlich versteinertes Holz finden. Die Steine stammen aus den südlichen Flüssen von Canterbury und werden entlang der Küstenstrände verteilt, bis sie auf Birdlings Flat durch die Sperre der Banks-Halbinsel gesammelt werden. Das meiste Material, das auf Birdlings Flat gefunden wird,taugt nur zum Trommelpolieren. Jedoch gelegentlich werden Achate, die groß genug zum Schneiden sind, an diesem Fundort gesammelt. Die besten Zeiten, Birdlings Flat zu besuchen um Achate zu sammeln, ist bei Ebbe entweder nach einem südlichen Sturm oder, wenn der Wind aus Nordosten oder Nordwesten für einige Tage durch gestürmt hat. Wenn diese Wetterbedingungen auftreten, ist es nicht ungewöhnlich, viele Sammler zu sehen, die von Christchurch her kommen, um den Strand abzusammeln.

Die meisten Achate, die auf Birdlings Flat gesammelt werden, sind graublau mit weißen Bänderungen. Moosachate jedoch können orange, rosafarben oder dunkelblau getönt sein.

Besuchern von Birdlings Flat wird ans Herz gelegt auch das dortige Mineralienmuseum zu besichtigen. Auf der Internestseite www.birdlingsmuseum.com erfährt man vieles über die Achatfunde der Region.
