Detailed Description

Slope Point ist der südlichste Punkt der Südinsel von Neuseeland. Er liegt in der Catlins Region. Diese Region wurde vor 150 Jahre geologisch durch vulkanische Ausbrüche und das Ablagern von Sedimenten gestaltet.Das Inland, sowie die Küste rund um Slope Point sind bei Sammlern beliebt. An der südlichen Küste gibt es mehrere Stellen, die von Sammlern nach Geröllen abgesucht werden. Die Klippen bestehen aus einem Konglomerat, das verwittert und vom Meer zerkleinert und wiederum abgelagert wird. Unter den beliebten Geröllen findet sich neben Achaten versteinerter Punga ( ein Farn), dessen schwarze Kiesel von den Sammlern gebleicht werden, um seine Struktur besser zum Erscheinen zu bringen. Im Inneren des Landes kann man sehr schönes versteinertes Holz triassischer Araucarien und von Farnen finden.
