Paläogen / Paleogene

Alter: 23,03 - 65,5 +/- 0,3 Mio. Jahre

Das Paläogen ist eine erdgeschichtliche Periode des Känozoikum. Es wird nach unten durch die Kreide, nach oben durch das Neogen begrenzt. Es ist in die Epochen Oligozän, Eozän und Paläozän gegliedert.

Für eine genaue zeitliche Einordnung siehe die Geologische Zeittafel.

Das Paläogen entspricht dem unteren Teil der früher verwendeten Periodenbezeichnung Tertiär. Diese ist von der International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS), einem Teil der IUGS, aus der offiziellen geologischen Zeittabelle gestrichen worden.
