Detailed description

Sammelbegriff für ultramafische, plutonische, meist braune bis schwarze Gesteine, welche fast gänzlich aus Pyroxenen bestehen und gelegentlich Biotit, Hornblende oder Olivin, seltener Spinell, Chromit, Apatit, Perowskit und Titanit enthalten.

Zu den wichtigsten Vertretern der Pyroxenite gehören:

  • Orthopyroxenit (z.B. Bronzit). Bronzitit ist eine Varietät von Orthopyroxenit welche fast vollständig aus Bronzit besteht.
  • Websterit
  • Klinopyroxenit (z.B. Diallag)
