James Sowerby

James Sowerby (* 21. 3. 1757 in London; † 25. 10. 1822 in Lambeth) war ein englischer Naturwissenschafter und Illustrator, der sich unter anderem mit Paläontologie und Mineralogie beschäftigte.

James Sowerby publizierte vor allem auf den Gebieten der Botanik und Mykologie, aber er begann auch die Herausgabe der vielbändigen “The mineral conchology of Great Britain or, Coloured figures and descriptions of those remains of testaceous animals or shells, which have been preserved at various times and depths in the earth”, welche von seinen Söhnen (James de Carle Sowerby und George Brettingham Sowerby) fortgesetzt wurde.
Seine „British Mineralogy: Or Coloured figures intended to elucidate the mineralogy of Great Britain (R. Taylor and co., London)” wurde in mehreren Teilbänden zwischen 1802 und 1817 publiziert.
