Historischer Zinnbergbau zuerst durch Seifen, dann in Schürfen und Stollen; dto. auch Kupferbergbau. Schiefergruben.

Geology

Cornwall besteht hauptsächlich aus Granite und Schiefer des Paläozoikums wobei tonige Schiefer aus dem Devon den Hauptteil bilden. Durch die Verschiebung verschiedener Gesteine während der variskischen Gebirgsbildung entstanden breite Brekzienzonen. Ablagerungen und sumpfige Gebiete führten im Unterkarbon zu Bildung kleineren Kohlevorkommen. Mit der kaledonischen Gebirgsbildung vor 300 Mio. Jahren setzten Prozesse ein die ganz Mitteleuropa veränderten. Diese Gebirgsbildung wurde von vulkanischen Aktivitäten begleitet.In dieser geologischen Veränderung und Assoziation verschiedener Gesteine folgten magmatisch-hydrothermale Bildungen innerhalb der Gesteinsspalten die eine bedeutende Mineralisation zu Tage brachten. Nach der Hebung Corwalls mit seinen Granitkuppen folgte auch wieder eine Absenkung mit Meeresüberflutung. Die erneute Hebung zu Beginn des Tertiärs folgten Verwitterungen des Granits die zu einer teilweisen Kaolinisierung führten. Das heutige Landschaft von Cornwall durch die Eiszeiten mit den Wechsel von Warmzeiten als derzeit letzte geologische Periode geprägt.

Detailed Description

Geschichte Cornwalls
Die erste Gewinnung von Zinn wurde bereits in der Bronzezeit aus Seifenlagerstätten vorgenommen welche durch Funde von Werkzeugen aus dieser Zeit belegt wurden. 1000 Jahre vor Chr. nutzten Griechen und Römer über viele 100 Jahre die britischen Zinnerzvorkommen aber eine „bergbaulichen Aktivität“ setzte vermutlich erst 250 – 410 v. Chr. durch die Römer ein. Durch die Briten erfolgte im 13. Jh. ein Abbau auf Blei und Silbererze. Ein reger Kupferbergbau hatte seine Blütezeit von der Mitte des 16. Jh. bis Mitte des 17.Jh. und mit einigen Unterbrechungen bis 1820. Nach der Stagnation von 1840 – 1850 erfolgten die ersten großen Auswanderungen zu den Erzminen in Australien. Ein weiterer Abbau in den 60er Jahren des 19. Jh. konnte an die Förderquoten der früheren Jahre nicht mehr anknüpfen. Der Wechsel der Geschichte durch Kriege und Billigförderungen aus dem Ausland führte zu einem starken Rückgang der aktiven Erzgruben so dass seit 1930 nur noch ein sporadischer Bergbau betrieben wurde. Erst 1965 begann eine systematische Wiederaufnahme der ehemaligen Gruben und die Halden in Cornwall wurden nochmals aufgearbeitet. Am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde eine Rekultivierung des alten Bergbaus abgeschlossen. Somit dürften für den Mineraliensammler Zugänge nur noch aus alten Sammlungsbeständen bzw. Auflösungen möglich sein.
