Journey Description

Die Gravel Hill Mine liegt in der NO Ecke von Perran Sands. Man geht am besten von Holywell am Küstenwanderweg Richtung Perranbeach. Dabei kommt man an der Holywell-Fundstelle vorbei. Alternativ kann man vom Strand aus kommen und findet direkt oberhalb des Strandes einen Aufschluß.

Detailed Description

Der 1.Name war Penhale Iron Mine. Abbau von 1728 bis ca. 1840. Dann wieder 1860 und von 1874-82. Die Mine tangiert den N Bereich der Perran Iron Lode. Der Gang wurde erschlossen durch einen Strand-Aufschluß und einen von der oberen Klippe aus. Ebenso wurde der Gang landeinwärts durch einen Tagebau erschlossen, der Big Iron Pit genannt wurde. Der Eisen-Gang wurde N-S durch einen Blei-Gang gekreuzt, der N kurz in Richtung Wheal Phoenix und East Wheal Golden getrieben wurde. Die Produktion des letzten Jahres ist bekannt: Ca. 8000 t Eisenerz und 30 t Zink-Erz. Es wurden in den Betriebsperioden mehr als 35.000 t 'Spathose' -Erz gefördert.

Einer der wenigen englischen Phosphat-Aufschlüsse.

Strunzit & Beraunit waren auch 2006 noch zu finden. Auch 2016 könnte man mit Glück noch einige Stücke finden. Dazu war allerdings Werkzeug und Ausdauer nötig. Einfach Limonitbrocken aufschlagen.
