Detailed Description

Ohne der Nachfrage aus der Zinkindustrie wären die Nenthead Blei- und Zinkminen am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts vermutlich zusammengebrochen. Das gewonnene Zinkerz wurde bis 1895 in der Zinkhütte in Tindale bei Carlisle verhüttet, mit der die Nenthead and Tynedale Lead and Zinc Company einen Vertrag hatte. Die "Tindale Spelter Company" produzierte im Jahr 1863 etwa 750-800 Tonnen Zink, die Produktion konnte 1876 auf 1293 Tonnen gesteigert werden. Umweltprobleme waren die Ursache, daß im Jahr 1895 der Earl of Carlisle eine Verringerung der Schwefeldioxod-Emissionen verlangte als Bedingung für die Betriebsverlängerung. Die Tindale Spelter Company fühlte sich nicht in der Lage, diese Forderung zu erfüllen, und stellte den Betrieb noch im gleichen Jahr ein. Im Folgejahr 1896 wurden die Nenthead Minen von ihrem Besitzer, der Nenthead and Tynedale Lead and Zinc Company an die Vielle Montage Zinc Co., Belgien verkauft. Fortan wurde das Zinkerz in Belgien verhüttet und vor Ort nurmehr aufbereitet. Die Nenthead Minen wurden mit einem hohen finanziellen Aufwand modernisiert und waren noch bis 1920 in Betrieb. Heute sind sie "Heritage Center" und Sitz des National Trusts.
