Pyritsonnen von Sparta

Die 350 Millionen Jahre alten Pyritsonnen werden in ca. 100 m Tiefe in Kohleminen rund um die Stadt Sparta gefunden. Die genaue Entstehung ist ungeklärt, es gibt Theorien, dass es umgewandelte Fossilien seien, z.B. Sanddollars (Clypeasteroida) oder Blätter der Seerosengewächse, oder Pyritkristalle, die durch Druck und Hitze gestaucht und radialstrahlig in eine zweidimensionale Wuchsrichtung gezwungen wurden.
Zigtausende sind seit Beginn des Bergbaus in der Region schon gefunden worden, die die Kohlebergarbeiter aufgelesen haben und an die Oberfläche gebracht haben.
Es heißt häufig, dass die Pyritsonnen in Schieferschichten unterhalb der Kohleflöze entstanden sind; Untersuchungen ergaben jedoch, dass sie in der Kohle entstanden sind. Die Kohle wurde fälschlicherweise für Schiefer gehalten. Zum Zeitpunkt der Funde sind die Sonnen durch Kohle stark verunreinigt. Erst eine langwierige und vorsichtige Reinigung mit sanften Strahlern lässt die Sonnen glänzen. Im Übrigen sind die bunt schimmernden Exemplare in heißer Seifenlauge getaucht, um Anlauffarben zu verursachen.
