Geology

Die untere Halbinsel schließt das Michigan-Basin ein, ein Gebiet sedimentärer Gesteine, welches von eiszeitlichem Geschiebe überlagert ist. Sie ist mineralogisch sehr verschieden mit großen Lagern von ged. Kupfer (die Keweenaw-Halbinsel) in Keweenaw, Houghton und Ontonagon Counties. Präkambrische Eisen-Formationen wurden abgebaut in den Gogebic-, Marquette- und Menominee-Eisenlagern in den Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson und Marquette Counties. Es gibt in diesen Teilen des Staats auch Kimberlite und Goldlager.
