Detailed Description

Bekannt wurde Zypern schon im Altertum durch seine reichhaltigen Vorkommen an Kupfer, das der Insel ihren lateinischen Namen „Cuprum“ gab; diese Vorkommen sind heute jedoch weitestgehend erschöpft. Von Bedeutung sind die Asbestvorkommen, in den Bergen befinden sich zudem große Marmorbrüche und Pyritminen. Dort gibt es auch Gipsgestein und Salzlagerstätten. An den Stränden wird Tonerde abgebaut.

Das Pigment Umbra wird in hervorragender Qualität in Zypern als natürliches Verwitterungsprodukt von eisenhaltigen Gesteinen und Mineralien gewonnen.

In jüngerer Zeit wurden an der Südküste Erdölvorkommen entdeckt, die auf 8 bis 10 Milliarden Barrel geschätzt werden und gegenwärtig von einem ägyptisch-libanesischen Konsortium erkundet werden.
