"A striking feature of the Asturian fluorite deposits is the
absence of significant sulphides, despite the metal content
(especially Zn and Pb) detected in the mineralizing fluids.
A possible explanation for this is a lack of sufficient
reduced sulphur. Minor amounts of sulphides (sphalerite,
galena and chalcopyrite) are scattered throughout the
deposits, but only in Villabona are sulphides (pyrite and
marcasite) present in significant amounts. However, barite
is more abundant than sulphides in some deposits,
although the Ba content of the fluids is comparable with
that of the metals. This situation could be explained if the
metalliferous brine is sulphide and sulphate poor, so that
only in those places where it mixes with the low-salinity
and sulphate-carrying fluid will barite precipitate."
