Cop­per - one of the old­est me­t­als of mankindCopper was one of the first metals ever extracted and used by humans, and it has made vital contributions to sustaining and improving society since the dawn of civilization.
The metal and its alloys have been used for thousands of years. Copper was first used in coins and ornaments starting about 8000 B.C., and at about 5500 B.C., copper tools helped civilization emerge from the Stone Age. In the Roman era, copper was principally mined on Cyprus, hence the origin of the name of the metal as сyprium (metal of Cyprus), later shortened to сuprum.

The discovery that copper alloyed with tin produces bronze marked the beginning of the Bronze Age at about 3000 B.C.
Copper is easily stretched, molded, and shaped; is resistant to corrosion; and conducts heat and electricity efficiently. As a result, copper was important to early humans and continues to be a material of choice for a variety of domestic, industrial, and high-technology applications today.

Ge­ol­o­gisch­es Por­trait - Wüste In kulturhistorischer Hinsicht spielte die Wüste seit der Antike eine wichtige Rolle in der europäischen Historiographie und Literatur. Einerseits symbolisierte die Wüste seit Herodot das Fremde und Andersartige, das sich dem europäischen Zugriff entzog. Andererseits bot die Wüste aber auch Rückzugsmöglichkeiten. Insbesondere durch die Bibel (Auszug aus Ägypten der Israeliten, Versuchungen Christi) und die spätere hagiographische Literatur (Eremiten) wurde ein Bild der Wüste nach Europa transportiert, das im Kern bis heute fortwirkt. Durch die Domestizierung des Dromedars gelang es dem Menschen, tiefer in die großen Wüsten vorzudringen und zu durchqueren. Dev­il's Pul­pitActually, this is a picturesque place in a well-kept forest. Nevertheless, in the past, evil itself is said to have preached to the damned here from a large, solitary, towering rock spur. Today, the term Devil's Pulpit inspires one to play with associations, as do the drawings of agates found here. Their fantastic outlines, coupled with the unusual shape of the secondary rock, evoke images in the viewer that he would not have suspected in a stone. And on the devil's pulpit no longer an evil demon is waiting for the agate collector, but other executive powers threatening with purgatory... a contribution by Klaus Schäfer and others (in german)

Min­er­alien­por­trait WulfenitDas Mineral Wulfenit wurde - so die allgemein verbreitete Version bzw. der allgemein verbreitete Irrtum - Ende des 18. Jh. vom österreichischen Jesuiten (Abbé), Botaniker und Mineralogen Franz Freiherr von Wulfen entdeckt und von ihm in seiner berühmten "Abhandlung vom Kärnthnerischen Bleyspathe" im Jahr 1785 beschrieben und gezeichnet, obwohl es bereits 1772 eine Veröffentlichung des Siebenbürgener Mineralogen und Geologen Ignaz von Born gab, mit dem Titel: "Plumbum spatosum flavo-rubrum pellucidum" (von Annaberg in Niederösterreich). Von Wulfen selbst zitierte den berühmten Bergrat Scopoli, welcher in seiner "Einleitung zur Kenntnis der Fossilien" den kärntherischen Bleyspat als " ungestaltete, ockergelblichte, versteinerte Bleyerde, welche im Zentner 27 bis 30 Pfund Blei enthält " beschrieb... ein Beitrag von Peter Seroka
