Münch­berg­er Gneis­masseDie Münchberger Gneismasse ist ein isoliertes Vorkommen von z.T. hochmetamorphen kristallinen Gesteinen inmitten des "Alten Gebirges" Nordostbayerns. Min­er­alien­por­trait: Tan­tal, Niob und Col­tanDas Element Tantal wurde 1802 vom schwedischen Chemiker Anders Gustav EKEBERG sowohl in einem Tantalit-Erz aus Kimito in Finnland als auch in Yttrotantalit aus Ytterby in Schweden gefunden. Er trennte ein sehr beständiges Oxid (Tantal(V)-oxid) ab, das sich in keiner Säure löste. Benannt ist es nach Tantalos, einer Figur aus der griechischen Mythologie. Diesen Namen wählte Ekeberg, um auf das Unvermögen, auch bei großer Menge an Säure nichts von dieser aufnehmen zu können, anzuspielen.

Etwas früher, im Jahr 1801, beschrieb der englische Chemiker Charles HATCHETT seine Analyse eines Minerals namens Columbit, benannt nach seinem Fundort in Nordamerika (zu dieser Zeit allgemein als Columbia bezeichnet). Das von ihm untersuchte Referenzmuster des Minerals hatte im Britischen Museum bereits seit 1753 gelegen. Er beschrieb das Mineral als "...einen schweren schwarzen Stein mit goldenen Streifen..." . Als Quelle des Minerals gab er Mr. Winthrop an, den ersten Gouverneur von Connecticut. Hattchet berichtete, dass das Mineral ...

Special chapters deal with the fluorite deposits and global settings, the mining of fluorspar and ore processing; One chapter shows the development of fluorite collecting in the past and now.

The most comprehensive part of the book is dedicated to the mineral's worldwide deposits, describing the best known old, classic and modern occurrences in 96 countries . A great number of mineral and mining photographs accompany each chapter, showing the characteristics of most fluorites from a specific deposit.

The Ts­in­gys of Mada­gas­carOne of Madagascar's geological specialties are the so-called Tsingy: bizarre, at first sight hostile Karst landscapes, though form, due to the inaccessibility, a refugial area for some species. The word Tsingy means "walking one tip-toes" or "where one cannot walk bare-foot" in Malagasy language, an accurate description for the partially razor-sharp rock formations which can reach 20 m in height and with ends which can be as thin as pencils.

Best known and most impressive are the Tsingy of Bemaraha in the West of the island and the Tsingy of Ankarana in the North, both widespread Karst areas. In the North, as well, about 10 km south of the city of Antsiranana, one can find the Red Tsingy which have been washed out of the lateritic layer of earth.
