Rosia Mon­ta­na (Veres­pa­tak), Ro­ma­niaThe village and the mine with the same name "Rosia Montana" are located approximately 85 km north of the city of Deva. The mine complex extends over 21.2 square kilometers and is one of the largest gold deposits in Europe. The tunnel system in the underground is several hundred kilometers long and was used until a few years ago. Already in Roman times the tunnels had a length of 145 km.

St. Joachim­sthal (Jachy­mov)Kaiser Siegmund schenkte seinem Kanzler Graf Kaspar Schlick die Herrschaft um die Stadt Schlackenwerth (Ostrov) 1434. Um diese Zeit dürfte schon in der Umgebung von Joachimsthal ein kleiner Bergbau umgegangen sein. Die Ansiedlung hieß Konradsgrün. Ein Nachfahre begründete mit anderen zusammen 1515 eine erste Gewerkschaft. Wobei 1515 für die ersten Erzfunde steht. 1516 weiß man von reicher Ausbeute an Silber. Dies lockte boom-artig viele Deutsche und Tiroler in das neugegründete Joachimsthal. Graf Schlick ließ zum Schutz die Burg Freudenstein erbauen. 1519 begann er mit der Prägung der Schlicken- bzw. Min­er­alien­por­trait GoethitAuf den ersten Blick erscheint es ungewöhnlich, gleichzeitig etwas über ein anerkanntes Mineral wie Goethit und über seine berühmten, jedoch nicht als Mineralspezies akzeptierten Abkömmlinge Limonit, Ocker und Raseneisenerz, sowie einige seltenere Varianten der limonitischen Familie, ja selbst über Gesteine zu lesen. Auf den zweiten Blick erkennt man jedoch, dass in diesem Portrait der Versuch unternommen wird, einmal der Tradition der bekannten Lehrbücher zu folgen, welche Goethit und Limonit wegen ihrer Verwandschaft zumeist gemeinsam betrachten, andererseits dem Mineraliensammler entgegenzukommen, für welchen Limonit - ob Gemisch, Gemenge oder Gestein - seit eh und je zu den eigenständigen Mineralien zählt... Al­ten­berg Tin MineThe Altenberg tin mine is well known for its huge surface break left by the mining activities. Among mineral collectors the mine is famous as well for its unique Pycnite deposit, a variety of topaz occurring in massive columnar aggregates up to a length of 30 cm.

The mining started in 1440 and continued, with several ups and downs and some total shut-down periods, until 1991. The mining activities aimed for a plutonic granite body (350 to 400 metre in diameter and hydrothermally mineralized mainly with cassiterite and smaller amounts of wolframite, molybdenite, arsenopyrite, bismuth and others) and managed to extract a total sum of 37 million tons of ore. The huge surface break, called "The Altenberger Pinge", is the result of several roof collapses caused by excessive ore excavation and later on the continued drawing of caved material from the bottom of the fracture zone.

Collectible minerals were rare and small, so the Altenberg tin mine became never as famous as the Freiberg or Ehrenfriedersdorf districts, but its unique geology and mining technology made it quite interesting and worth a closer look.
