The Franken­holz Mine – A Hid­den Chapter of In­dus­trial His­to­ryFrom early tunnel construction in the 18th century to its final closure in the 1950s, the Frankenholz Mine in Germany’s Saar region was a key site of coal mining history. With ambitious shaft projects, its own cableway connection to Bexbach, and remarkable geological features – including fossil discoveries and natural oil seepages – the mine reflects both the rise of industrial progress and the dangers of underground work. Gas explosions, water ingress, and tragic accidents shaped the lives of thousands of miners. Frankenholz remains a compelling reminder of a bygone mining era.

St. An­dreas­berg im HarzDas sogenannte Silbererzrevier von St. Andreasberg ist eine schmale, nach Westen keilförmig auslaufende Fläche. Diese ist ungefähr 6 km lang und 1 km breit. Sie liegt dicht am südlichen Rand des Brockengranites.

Es wurden in diesem Revier etwa 18 erzführende Gänge und 6 bis 8 taube "Ruscheln" im Laufe der Betriebszeit erschlossen und mehr oder weniger intensiv abgebaut. Auserhalb dieses "Silberdreieckes" sind noch andere Erzgänge bekannt, die jedoch eine andere Mineralführung aufweisen: Eisenspat, Schwerspat und nur geringe Mengen von Pb-, Zn- und Cu-Sulfiden.

Wan­ni­gletsch­er-Scher­ba­dung - Eine span­nende Steine-Geschichte...Während meines Studiums profitierte ich in besonderer Weise von den jeweils dreimonatigen Semesterferien. Ich verbrachte sie hauptsächlich im schweizerischen Binntal, wo ich bei dem einheimischen Strahler Andre Gorsatt quasi „ in die Lehre gehen“ durfte. Ich reinigte und formatierte Fundstücke, begleitete zuerst die Strahlerexkursionen, die Andre Gorsatt anbot und durfte in Folge auch eigene Führungen leiten. Es mag an meinem Habitus von einem Drittel Athlet und zwei Dritteln Pykniker gelegen haben, dass ich in der Hauptsache für die Familien- und Senioren-Führungen vorgesehen wurde... The Ts­in­gys of Mada­gas­carOne of Madagascar's geological specialties are the so-called Tsingy: bizarre, at first sight hostile Karst landscapes, though form, due to the inaccessibility, a refugial area for some species. The word Tsingy means "walking one tip-toes" or "where one cannot walk bare-foot" in Malagasy language, an accurate description for the partially razor-sharp rock formations which can reach 20 m in height and with ends which can be as thin as pencils.

Best known and most impressive are the Tsingy of Bemaraha in the West of the island and the Tsingy of Ankarana in the North, both widespread Karst areas. In the North, as well, about 10 km south of the city of Antsiranana, one can find the Red Tsingy which have been washed out of the lateritic layer of earth.

ZincIin 1546 Georgius Agricola reported about a white metal which is fused to the Rammelsberg lead and silver melter and that you could scrape off. He called this metal "contrefey", because it could imitate gold. Agricola did not recognize that this metal was zinc. He further observed that a similar metal, which he named from some unknown reasons "ZINCUM" arose under similar circumstances in Silesia during smelting.
