Min­er­al Por­trait PyriteThe term used in the plural "pyrites" has often been misused in the past or in common for marcasite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and other yellow to brass-colored minerals. The word pyrite is derived from the Greek "pyrites lithos" (derived pyr = fire and lithos = stone) and describes a characteristic of the mineral, when rubbing against steel or flint (flint) to generate sparks. In prehistoric tombs pyrite concretions and unrolled pyrite where found, which supposed to be used for lighting a fire. (Article in German)

Min­er­alien­por­trait JaspisJaspis ist eine mikrokristalline, feinkörnige Varietät des Minerals Quarz und gehört wie dieses zur Mineralklasse der Oxide mit einem Stoffmengenverhältnis mit Metall: Sauerstoff = 1:2. Es ist eng verwandt mit dem stets faserig aufgebauten Chalcedon. Die Verwandtschaft ist so eng, dass sogar Stücke vorkommen, bei denen körnig und faserig aufgebaute Quarzmaterialien miteinander verwachsen sind. Jaspis ist nur sehr selten in reiner Form zu finden. Durch Verwachsungen mit Achat und Opal, aber auch durch Fremdbeimengungen von bis zu 20 % wie Tonerde, Eisenoxid, Eisenhydroxid und Manganhydroxid schwanken seine chemischen und physikalischen Eigenschaften sehr stark. Min­er­alien­por­trait Sand­calc­itSandcalcite sind Calcite, die während ihrer Bildung größere Mengen von Sand, zuweilen bis weit über 50%, "poikilitisch" im Kristall eingeschlossen haben. Sandcalcite sind somit eine Variante des Calcits. Sie zeichnen sich gegenüber anderen Mineralien dadurch aus, dass der eingeschlossene Sand das Kristallwachstum nicht wesentlich behindert. Neben Calcit sind sandhaltige Kristalle auch von den Mineralen Baryt (z.B. aus Rockenberg in Hessen), Gips (Wüsten-, bzw. Sandrosen) und Steinsalz bekannt. Sandcalcite sind unter den Calciten eine Seltenheit, auch wenn sie sich nicht gerade durch eine große Attraktivität auszeichnen. Fälschlicherweise werden sie oft als Pseudomorphosen bezeichnet, durch einen einfachen Test mit verdünnter Salzsäure (HCl) kann jedoch schnell das Gegenteil bewiesen werden. Pet­ri­fied For­est Na­tio­n­al ParkThe Petrified Forest is primarily a geological park, which owes its origin to the climate and geological events. It is part of the so-called Painted Desert and shows with its various layers a strange and impressive scenery. Characterized by erosion, it is a treasure trove of fossils. The rock formations show a chronicle of the past and give clues about the events of bygone days. In the park you can exposure rock strata until 234 million years ago. The colorful desert hills, the flat mesas and shaped hills attributable primarily to Chinle Formation and are fluvial sediments, caused by water movement. Countless fossilized wood and tree trunks bear witness to a scrumptious earlier fauna.

San Ti­m­o­teo Mine at La Union min­ing area, Mur­cia, SpanienGypsum needels and blue Baryte have made this mine known for mineral collectors. A recent report from Sept. 2012 shows that good finds are still possible. To visit this mine is relatively easy. The evacuation of the gypsum needels on the other hand is more difficult. Perl­proben... Man glüht in der rauschenden Flamme eines Bunsenbrenners ein Magnesiastäbchen bis zur Rotglut aus. Mit dem heißen Magnesiastäbchen wird eine kleine Menge Borax oder Phosphorsalz aufgenommen und vorsichtig in die Brennerflamme gebracht. Unter ständigen Drehen wird das Salz so lange in der Brennerflamme gedreht, bis eine klare Perle entstanden ist. The Mu­nich Show 2025The Mineralientage München 2025 – The Munich Show once again showcased a fascinating variety of minerals, fossils, and jewelry. Although visitor numbers appeared slightly lower than last year, the fair remained vibrant and diverse. Highlights included the collector displays and the special exhibition on natural resources, while the fossil section was somewhat smaller.
Some visitors expressed a wish for more seating areas, opportunities for exchange, and more eye-catching advertising, yet overall the event left a very positive impression and remains a must-visit for collectors and families alike.
