Ge­o­log­i­cal Por­trait - The AlpsThe Alps are the highest and most extensive mountain range system that lies entirely in Europe, stretching approximately 1,200 km across eight Alpine countries from Austria and Slovenia in the east, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, and France to the west, and Italy and Monaco to the south. The Caucasus Mountains are higher, and the Urals longer, but both lie partly in Asia. The Alps were formed over tens of millions of years as the African and Eurasian tectonic plates collided. Extreme shortening caused by the event resulted in marine sedimentary rocks rising by thrusting and folding into high mountain peaks such as Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn. Mont Blanc spans the French–Italian border, and at 4,810 m is the highest mountain in the Alps. The Alpine region area contains about a hundred peaks higher than 4,000 m known as the "four-thousanders".

Felsenp­fad im Saarp­falz-KreisDer Rundwanderweg Nr. 41 der Wanderkarte des Saarpfalzkreises, beginnt an den Wasserfelsen, die im Sommer wie im Winter unablässig Tropfwasser abgeben. Geologen sprechen von einer Schichtquelle. Von hier oben genießt man den Blick über das Dorf und die Kirkeler Burg. Auf unserem weiteren Weg erreichen wir bald den Frauenbrunnen, eine weit und breit bekannte Quelle. Etwa 50 m oberhalb beginnt in östlicher Richtung der geologische Lehrpfad, entstanden 1983. Am Anfang des Weges wurde eine Übersichtskarte aufgestellt, die das Saarland, sowie angrenzende Teile geologisch umfaßt und die Fundorte der aufgestellten Steine anzeigt...

Dev­il's Pul­pitActually, this is a picturesque place in a well-kept forest. Nevertheless, in the past, evil itself is said to have preached to the damned here from a large, solitary, towering rock spur. Today, the term Devil's Pulpit inspires one to play with associations, as do the drawings of agates found here. Their fantastic outlines, coupled with the unusual shape of the secondary rock, evoke images in the viewer that he would not have suspected in a stone. And on the devil's pulpit no longer an evil demon is waiting for the agate collector, but other executive powers threatening with purgatory... a contribution by Klaus Schäfer and others (in german)

San Ti­m­o­teo Mine at La Union min­ing area, Mur­cia, SpanienGypsum needels and blue Baryte have made this mine known for mineral collectors. A recent report from Sept. 2012 shows that good finds are still possible. To visit this mine is relatively easy. The evacuation of the gypsum needels on the other hand is more difficult. Beryl - (Goshenite, Aqua­marine, Emer­ald, Mor­ganite, He­lio­dore ...)Because of its form, color and transparency, Beryl has always fascinated people. Emeralds, aquamarines, heliodors and morganites were and are used for the manufacture of jewelry because of their beauty. The common beryl is the main source of the metal beryllium; 80 % of beryllium ore is mined in the United States. The largest known crystal reached a length of 18 m.

This lavishly researched and very comprehensive portrait by the author Peter Seroka relates to history, name origin, causes of color, occurrences , paragenesis and the use of this mineral and its varieties. Subchapters with numerous photographs and drawings deal with the extraordinary beauty of the mineral. Each chapter itself is a separate portrait of a distinctive variety and its characteristics, occurrences, use and history.

Al­ten­berg (Vieille Mon­tagne)... Die Nutzung der Zinkerze der Lagerstätte Altenberg ist seit 1344 belegt. Dort wurde Galmei abgebaut, welches schon vor der Erfindung der Direktverhüttung von Zinkerzen die Messingherstellung ermöglichte. Die hier betrachtete Lagerstätte Altenberg kann allerdings, im Gegensatz zur benachbarten Lagerstätte Gessenich (römisch: Grasciniacum) im Stolberger Raum, nicht bis in die Römerzeit zurück verfolgt werden. Auf den aktuellen topografischen Karten (z.B. Top25 Deutschland, Blatt 5202 Aachen) ist der Altenberg nicht mehr zu finden... ein Beitrag von Norbert Kirchhoff
